October 2023 Virtual Workshop: Think Pink!

Good evening Crafty Friends!

If you weren’t able to join me live on Thursday night, please check out the video below.   This month's workshop is all about Breast Cancer Awareness and all things pink!  October has long been Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but we can really bring awareness for all cancers - and what can we, as paper crafters, do to help.  We can help others by sending them smiles and paper hugs!

My overall message to all of you is this, and I speak from my own personal experience here - If you know someone who has cancer, or has someone in their family who has it, and they're going through all the things - treatments, surgeries, appointments galore, all of the things - they will be so happy to hear from you, and a card is a perfect way to send your thoughts and sentiments.  We don't always want to talk on the phone, or answer text messages, or respond to emails...sometimes it's just too much.  But to hear that people are still in our corner is a really good thing.  SO send the cards.  For that matter - send the texts and emails, just don't expect a response.  Sometimes there's just not enough energy or time in the day to respond.

This month, I went with a Think Pink theme.  Make any card with shades of pink.  It works!  If pink just is not your thing - change the colors!

Check out my Workshop of the Month page for details about my workshop, the ordering specials and the online ordering code.  Short version:  Use code MPZE9VGP when placing your qualifying order online this month and get some freebies -

Just a reminder that I am generally Live on-line every Thursday at 8:00pm ET.  I am streaming to BOTH YouTube and Facebook simultaneously.

If you are not able to catch me live, you can watch over on YouTube.  If the picture does not appear below, you can click HERE to get to it on YouTube.

First card is what I call an Abstract Watercolor.  I watercolored with different shades directly on the watercolor paper - to SORT OF line up with the die-cut.  This die cut is from the Artistic dies and some of the Online Exclusive Self-Adhesive Glitter paper in Silver.

I worked in one color area at a time with the wet-on-wet watercolor technique.  I was loosely following the die-cut as far as where I laid down each color.  Wet the paper, then bring in some ink and move the color around.  Dry in between colors.

I watercolored with Berry Burst, Flirty Flamingo, Bubble Bath, and Lemon Lime Twist inks.

Paper measurements:
  • Berry Burst:  5 1/2" x 8 1/2”, scored and folded in half at 4 1/4”
  • Basic White:  4” x 5 1/4”, for inside of card
  • Watercolor paper:  3 3/4" x 5"
  • Basic White:  scrap die cut with Meadows dies, for greeting

Water colored panel is popped up, and greeting label is also popped up on top of that.  Finish off with some Iridescent Pearls.

Stamps:  Go To Greetings
Ink:  Berry Burst, Flirty Flamingo, Bubble Bath, Lemon Lime Twist, Midnight (Catherine Pooler)
Paper: Berry Burst, Basic White, Watercolor Paper, Self-Adhesive Glimmer paper in Silver
Other:  Artistic dies, Meadows dies, water painter, Iridescent Pearls

Second card is another watercolor technique card.  This one did not work out as well as I expected.  I sprayed the watercolor paper down with water FIRST, then stamped a line of trees on top of all the water....too much water.  It dried with no tree images in the Bubble Bath, so I had to re-stamp the line of trees.

Add some Melon Mambo die cut trees and a greeting panel.

Paper measurements:
  • Melon Mambo:  5 1/2" x 8 1/2”, scored and folded in half at 4 1/4”
  • Basic White:  4” x 5 1/4”, for inside of card
  • Watercolor paper:  3 3/4" x 5"
  • Melon Mambo:  4 1/4" x 5 1/2" piece, die cut trees with Forever Forest dies
  • Basic White:  scrap die cut with Meadows dies, for greeting
Glue the Melon Mambo trees down flat, and then I glued the whole panel down flat on the Melon Mambo base.

Greeting is stamped in black ink, with some Melon Mambo ink-blended on the edges.  I will very likely include Very Vanilla pieces instead of Basic White in your kits.  The watercolor paper really looks vanilla....and the Basic White just doesn't look the best (to me anyway).

Finish off with some Iridescent Pearls.

Stamps:  Forever Forest Bundle, Go To Greetings
Ink:  Bubble Bath, Melon Mambo, Midnight (Catherine Pooler)
Paper:  Melon Mambo, Watercolor paper, Basic White
Other:  Iridescent Pearls

Third project is a Faux Step card, and I decided that my panel would be off to the side, so it's a Faux Side Step Card.  This is simple as far as stamping...you're only stamping the greeting.  The rest is die-cuts, designer series paper, and embossed pieces.  Die cut the weeds out of Pebbled Path cardstock and the Meadows dies.

Feel free to swap out the embossed layers for a different pattern of paper, and vice versa.

Paper measurements:
  • Moody Mauve:  4 1/4" x 9", scored at 1 1/4", 2 1/2", and 5 3/4"
  • Moody Mauve:  2 1/2" x 11", scored in half at 5 1/2"
  • Fresh as a Daisy DSP (Moody Mauve print):  3" x 4"
  • Basic White:  3" x 4", for back to write on
  • Moody Mauve:  2 1/4" x 5 1/4", embossed with Exposed Brick folder
  • Moody Mauve: 1" x 4", embossed with Basics #2 folder
  • Basic White:  scrap to stamp and hand-cut greeting
Picture of the card standing up (sorry for the shadows).  You also get a peek at my MESK (Messy Desk - that's a Craft Roulette made up saying!).

Of course, I like ripping the edges of the greeting.  If you don't like that, keep them straight, or cut them.  Finish off with a few Iridescent Pearls.

Stamps: Go To Greetings
Ink:  Midnight (Catherine Pooler)
Paper:  Moody Mauve, Pebbled Path, Fresh as a Daisy designer series paper
Other:  Meadow dies, Exposed Brick & Basics #2 embossing folders, Iridescent Pearls.

The last project is a gift box, made from ONE sheet of 8 1/2" x 11" Bubble Bath cardstock.  I haven't made a box in a LONG time, so I really needed this.  This is a two-piece box, so you'll make the top and bottom, and then add the tag.  Finished box size is 2 1/2" x 5 1/2" x 1 1/2" tall.  Plenty of room to give someone a treat or small gift.  Change the greeting, and use it for a birthday surprise or any occasion really.

I stamped the speckles all over the box TOP only, using Bubble Bath ink.

Paper measurements:
  • Bubble Bath (box top):  5 1/2" x 8 1/2", scored at 1 1/2" on all four sides
  • Bubble Bath (box bottom):  5 7/16" x 8 7/16", scored at 1 1/2" on all four sides
  • Basic White:  scrap to die cut the tag from Something Fancy dies
  • Bubble Bath:  scrap to stamp/punch out the truck and greeting
Here's a look of the side.  You can see I punched a half circle/thumb spot on the sides of the box lids.

Close-up of the tag.  I stamped the speckles all over the tag, with Bubble Bath ink.  Then stamp and punch out the truck.  Pop it up.  I stamped the greeting on a leftover bit of cardstock and glued it down flat.

Tie some White 3/8" Glittered Organdy ribbon, and add the tag on there.  Finish off with a few Iridescent Pearls.

Stamps:  Trucking Along bundle, Perched on a Tree, Go To Greetings
Ink:   Bubble Bath, Tuxedo Memento
Paper:  Very Vanilla (Thick and regular), Oxidized Copper
Other:  Something Fancy dies, 1" circle punch, White 3/8" Glittered Organdy ribbon, Iridescent Pearls

I hope you're excited to create these projects, and send some joy to a few people!
