5 1/2" Square Card with 3 Ways to Make an Envelope!

I CANNOT express how much I am IN LOVE with making these 6" x 6" envelopes using different size papers.  Once you understand the envelope design principals, you can adjust and make other sizes - and you are NOT reliant on having 12" x 12" paper.

If you watch the video, PLEASE ignore the fact that I messed up some parts of the first and second envelopes.  Third one worked like a charm.  :)  You'll still get the right idea for the first two.

Just a reminder that I am generally Live on-line every Thursday at 8:00pm ET.  I am streaming to BOTH YouTube and Facebook simultaneously.

If you are not able to catch me live, you can watch over on YouTube.  If the picture does not appear below, you can click HERE to get to it on YouTube.

ALL three cards tonight are 5 1/2" x 5 1/2" finished size.  Envelopes are 6" x 6" finished size.  I'll be listing out all of the measurements for all three envelopes but you'll need to watch the video for assembly instructions.

The first card features some of the Regency Park 6" x 6" papers on the card front.  Add some ribbon, and a couple of dragonflies, and that's about it.  I finished off with some Milky Dots (Mango Melody), and a single Dragonfly Trinket glued on.  The greeting layer is popped up.  Very simple card to make, but I think it's really pretty!

Paper measurements:
  • Night of Navy:  5 1/2" x 11", scored and folded at 5 1/2"
  • Balmy Blue:  5 1/4" x 5 1/4"
  • Regency Park DSP:  5 1/16" x 5 1/16"
  • Basic White:  5 1/4" x 5 1/4", for inside of card
  • Night of Navy:  3 11/16" x 3 11/16"
  • Regency Park:  3 1/2" x 3 1/2"
  • Basic White:  scrap to stamp/punch out dragonflies
NOW for the FUN part - making the envelope.  This envelope was made from ONE sheet of 8 1/2" x 11"  cardstock.

Cut the first piece 6 1/2" x 11".  Score at 5", then turn and score 1/4" from each end - so that will be 1/4", and 6 1/4".

Cut the second piece from what's left to be 2" x 6".  Score on the 2" side at 3/8".  This will be the envelope flap.  ALL of the envelope flaps will be this same measurement, on all three projects.

Watch the video for cutting/assembly of all the envelopes.

Stamps:  Good Feelings, Dragonfly Garden
Ink:  Night of Navy
Paper: Night of Navy, Balmy Blue, Basic White, Regency Park Designs Designer series paper
Other:  Night of Navy 3/8" Bordered Ribbon, Clear Wink of Stella brush, Milky Dots

Second project features the Butterfly Kisses 6" x 6" Designer series papers.  I cut those butterflies directly from one of the sheets; I taped it to some Basic White first, to make it a little more sturdy.  I made this card ahead of time, because I wanted to focus on making the envelope.  I'll still list the measurements below though.  I made the envelope using (2) pieces of 6" x 6" DSP and a 2" x 6" piece of Parakeet Party for the flap, along with a few pieces for hinges.

Paper measurements:
  • Calypso Coral:  5 1/2" x 11", scored and folded at 5 1/2"
  • Parakeet Party:  5 1/4" x 5 1/4"
  • Butterfly Kisses DSP:  5 1/16" x 5 1/16"
  • Basic White:  5 1/4" x 5 1/4", for inside of card
  • Parakeet Party:  3 11/16" x 3 11/16"
  • Butterfly Kisses Park:  3 1/2" x 3 1/2"
  • Calypso Coral:  2 3/8" x 2 3/4"
  • Basic White:  2 3/16" x 2 9/16"
  • Basic White:  scrap to stamp/punch out dragonflies
Popped the greeting layer up, and added the butterflies.  Finish off with some Iridescent Rhinestones.

To make the ENVELOPE - you'll need the following:  (again, watch video for assembly)
  • Butterfly Kisses DSP:  (1) 6" x 6", (1) 5" x 6".  Pay attention to the direction of your pattern on the second piece.  You want it 5" tall by 6" wide.
  • Parakeet Party:  3/4" x 5 7/8",  scored in half at 3/8" for the bottom hinge.
  • Parakeet Party:  (2) 3/4" x 4 7/8", scored in half at 3/8".  These are the side hinges.
  • Parakeet Party:  2" x 6", scored on the short side at 3/8".  This is the envelope flap.
Stamps:  Biggest Wish
Ink:  Calypso Coral, Parakeet Party
Paper:  Calypso Coral, Parakeet Party, Basic White, Butterfly Kisses designer series paper
Other:  Iridescent Rhinestones

My third project features the Ready to Ride Designer series papers.  I didn't even do any stamping on this one!!!  It's all the paper, and then I made a label with my label maker.

Paper measurements:
  • Basic Black:  5 1/2" x 11", scored and folded at 5 1/2"
  • Pumpkin Pie:  5 1/4" x 5 1/4"
  • Ready to Ride DSP:  5 1/16" x 5 1/16"
  • Very Vanilla:  5 1/4" x 5 1/4", for inside of card
  • Basic Black:  3 3/8" x 3 3/8"
  • Pumpkin Pie:  3 3/16" x 3 3/16"
  • Ready to Ride DSP:  3" x 3"
I made that label and stuck it down with some extra glue.  Pop that whole layered bit up, and finish off with some Black Matte Dots.  Pretty simple.

To make the ENVELOPE - you'll need the following:  (watch video for assembly)
  • Ready to Ride DSP:  6" x 11"  (cut that 1" off and use it on something else),  score on the long side at 5".
  • Pumpkin Pie:  (2) 3/4" x 4 7/8", scored in half at 3/8".  These are the side hinges.  Notice NO bottom hinge is needed, because the DSP folds up to make the bottom.
  • Basic Black:  2" x 6", scored on the short side at 3/8".  This is the envelope flap.
Stamps:  None
Ink:  None
Paper:  Basic Black, Pumpkin Pie, Very Vanilla, Ready to Ride designer series papers
Other:  label maker, Black Matte Dots

Whew!  Even though I had a few fumbles tonight, I do still love the end results.  Square cards are amazing opportunities to write someone a longer message, or use these to hand-carry to an event:  wedding, shower, birthday party...you get the idea.  Have fun with these!!  I'd love to see what you make!
