Altered Half-Composition Book: Gallery Blooms and Floral Charm

Good evening friends!  I needed a fresh composition book, and I had some time today - so here is my latest creation!  I love altering these half-size composition books and adding pockets inside.  I get a lot of use out these books, and I carry mine in my tote bag at all times.  I add three pockets inside, and I make a matching altered paperclip.

What do I do with the old book and paperclip once I'm finished with it?  I throw the notebook in the trash, and rip all the paper bits off of the paperclip and start fresh!

I made a video back in 2024 on how to make one of these, if you'd like to make one for yourself.  I made this one exactly the same way!  If the picture does not appear below, you can click HERE to get to it.

I'm not going to give you step by step instructions in this post, because it's all in the video.  I will give you measurements and pictures, so you can figure things out.   You will really want to watch the video to see how to make the roomy inside pocket.  I use pages in the actual notebook to form the pocket, then cover both sides with cardstock.

Before I get too far - I know some of you are already wondering...where do I get this half-size composition notebook?   I got a 10-pack at Walmart a few years ago.  They always seem to be out when the school supplies go on sale in the summer.  I stocked up back then, but I do still see them every year.  If you absolutely must have one right this second, I'm sure you can find them online somewhere.

I encourage you to measure your own notebook before cutting your papers.  I measured from the black spine wrap to the edge.  Yours may be different, even with the same style notebook.

Paper Measurements:
  • Woven Textures DSP:  (2) 4 7/8" x 6 3/4", for front and back outside covers
  • Floral Charm DSP:  (2) 4 3/4" x 6", for inside covers
  • Woven Textures DSP:  (2) 2" x 4 7/8", for inside cover flat pockets
  • Timid Tiger:  (2) 4 7/8" x 7 1/4", to make inside storage pocket
  • Mossy Meadow:  3 1/2" x 5"
  • Basic White:  3 1/4" x 4 3/4"
Inside front cover, flat pocket.  Already transferred my notes to the pocket.

Roomy inside pocket and a look at my altered paperclip.

Filled up my pocket and clipped in some tickets that I kept from a bingo and a raffle.  I will actually use these tickets in a journal or scrapbook, but for now - they live in this notebook.

My altered paper clip.  I just use some scraps of the designer series papers.  Hand-cut some of the flowers and glued them on.  Added some gems.  Nothing fancy, but it's still a little bit cool.

Inside back cover pocket.  Again, I already shoved my previous notes in this pocket.

Give that video a watch, if you haven't seen it yet.  I think you will be happily surprised at how easy it is to complete this project.
