Happy Rainy Sunday night folks! It's wet here anyway. Was raining earlier when I started this blog post an hour ago. :) Let's talk about all the PLAID things that I made on Thursday night! I love a good plaid, and we have so many different products that have or make plaids...you can even make your own! So let's dive in...
Just a reminder that I am generally Live on-line every Thursday at 8:00pm ET. I stream to BOTH YouTube and Facebook simultaneously, but I recommend viewing on YouTube.
If you are not able to catch me live, you can watch over on YouTube. If the picture does not appear below, you can click HERE to get to it.
First PLAID was using a plaid print straight out of a designer series paper pack. We actually have a few different paper packs available (as of today) with plaids in them. Search "plaid" in my online store, and you'll see LOTS of options.
I started off with a fun fold that I recently used for a Craft Roulette challenge - a Dutch Door Fold. You basically add a flip that is half the size of the front of the card. Add layers and embellish as you want. I went with the largest leaf die-cut, then stamped and die-cut some of the smaller leaves.
I'm not thrilled that most of the leafy print dsp is covered up by the postage-stamp die-cut layer, but that's how it goes sometimes.
Paper Measurements:
- Cajun Craze: 4 1/4" x 5 1/2"
- Cajun Craze: 2 3/4" x 4 5/8", scored at 4 1/4"
- Gathering Together DSP (Plaid): 4" x 5 1/4"
- Gathering Together DSP (Leaves): 2 1/2" x 4"
- Cajun Craze: 4" x 5", cut with Postage stamp die
- Basic White: 4" x 5", cut with Postage stamp die (exact same die as above)
- Gathering Together DSP (Plaid): 3 5/16" x 4 5/16" (whatever size needed to layer in your postage dies)
- Crushed Curry/Early Espresso/Cajun Craze: scraps to stamp/die-cut leaves
- Basic Beige: scrap to stamp and hand-cut greeting
I added a jute bow, and some Streaked Dots to finish.
Picture of the card open - you can see that having the same exact shape of Basic White behind the door allows room for writing your message, and it won't be seen until you open the card.
Stamps: Gathering Moments Bundle
Ink: Early Espresso, Crushed Curry, Cajun Craze
Paper: Cajun Craze, Crushed Curry, Early Espresso, Basic Beige, Basic White, Gathering Together Designer Series paper
Other: Postage stamp dies (Unity Stamp Co), jute twine, Streaked Dots
My second Plaid project used the Forever Plaid embossing folder. I think the embossed plaid goes with ANYTHING. Any theme, any other patterns, any colors...it's really a workhorse. I paired it with a flower bouquet on this one. Also threw in one of the new Lovely Doilies (part of the November Online Exclusive release).
I made the embossed layer with a very tiny border, and then pushed the edges up with the flat edge of my teflon bone folder. You could also use a fingernail, or maybe a straight edge ruler - whatever you need to get that edge pushed up.

Color those flowers in with any coloring medium you prefer. I used regular Stampin' Write Markers (which are going away, don't forget). You could color with anything. I did also hit them with a Clear shimmer marker after.
Off-set the doily, along with the flowers. I just like the look of that over just plopping everything in the middle of the card. I don't know why.
Paper Measurements:
- Pretty in Pink: 5 1/2" x 8 1/2", scored at 4 1/4"
- Basic White: 4" x 5 1/4", for inside of card
- Pretty in Pink: 4 1/8" x 5 3/8", embossed with Forever Plaid folder
- Basic White: scrap to stamp/die-cut flower and hand-cut greeting
Finished with some Pretty in Pink gems.
Stamps: Gallery Blooms, 12 Days of Crafting Advent Calendar stamp set
Ink: Onyx (Versafine)
Paper: Pretty in Pink, Basic White
Other: Forever Plaid embossing folder, Lovely Doilies, Strawberry Slush & Pretty in Pink Gems, Stampin' Write markers, Clear Shimmer brush marker, green grosgrain ribbon (old, but matches Shy Shamrock perfectly!)
The third plaid project used some PLAID specialty paper. This time it was the Irresistible Designs paper. This specialty paper is white with a clear embossed pattern. Three different patterns in the pack, and one of them is plaid! I used the ink smooshing technique to add Darling Duckling and Secret Sea color blobs....I tried not to let them mix too much to make green. I love the effect!
If you do not have any of this Irresistible Designs paper, you can make your own! You'll need Basic White cardstock, a plaid stamp (maybe you have one in your stash), Versamark ink, and clear or white embossing powder - that's the ingredients for the Emboss Resist Technique.
Paper Measurements:
- Secret Sea: 5 1/2" x 8 1/2", scored at 4 1/4"
- Basic White: 4" x 5 1/4", for inside of card
- Irresistible Designs Specialty DSP (Plaid print): 4" x 5 1/4"
- Darling Duckling: 3 1/4" x 3 1/4"
- Boho Vibes DSP: 3" x 3"
- Basic White: scraps to stamp/die-cut sailboat, and hand-cut greeting
I used some Low Profile Sparkle Gems in Darling Duckling to finish this one.
Stamps: Sunrise Sailing Bundle, 12 Days of Crafting Advent Calendar
Ink: Tuxedo (Memento), Secret Sea, Darling Duckling
Paper: Secret Sea, Darling Duckling, Basic White, Boho Vibes Designer Series Paper, Irresistible Designs Specialty Paper
Other: Stampin' Blends markers, Low Profile Sparkle Gems
The last Plaid project is a tag, and I hand-drew the plaids! You can use any marker, colored pencil, Sharpie, crayon...whatever you want to just draw lines on your paper. If you would rather your lines be perfectly straight, you can use a ruler. I did not. I didn't mind the wobbliness of my hand-drawn lines.
I used two Stampin' Write markers - the small rounded end of the Secret Sea, and the brush end of the Cloud cover marker. I wanted that difference in line width.
Unfortunately, I already gave this pretty away and I didn't have measurements written down in my notes. Use whatever layering dies you have. I used the Everyday Arches dies, and I didn't have any current Stampin' Up snowman, so I used one of my new snowmen from Unity Stamp Co. Use whatever you have! This didn't even have to be a snowman. I could have gone with different colors and added balloons or a cupcake for a birthday tag.
The point was to hand-draw your own plaid. :)
I hope you found something in this week's projects that you can try out in your own crafting projects! Join me this coming Thursday for some Ornamental Christmas projects. This is one of the bundles that I got from the Sep-Dec Mini. I'm about to make a set of Christmas cards right now, for this week's 12 Weeks of Christmas Cards edition...I'd better get in that craft room!
Thanks for visiting, and Happy stamping!
