SQUARE Stack the Deck Mini Album Project

Hello Crafty Peeps!

This past Thursday, I demonstrated how to make a SQUARE mini album using the "Stack the Deck" system.  You can use this method to make hinges for mini books, OR for the pages themselves as I did here.  Check out my post from a few months ago where I made my first mini album with this method.  The difference is my most recent creation is a SQUARE Mini Album.  I love it!

This album is 5 1/2" x 5 1/2" with a 1" spine, finished.  Pages are all 5" x 5".  Nice!  This is a very easy book for beginner's to make.

Just a reminder that I am generally Live on-line every Thursday at 8:00pm ET.  I am streaming to BOTH YouTube and Facebook simultaneously.

If you are not able to catch me live, you can watch over on YouTube.  If the picture does not appear below, you can click HERE to get to it on YouTube.

Notice that I have not decorated my album or added pictures yet.  This video was about the process of MAKING the book, so you can learn that part.  I did show how to add two different styles of pockets - flat vs. gusset. to the inside covers.

I'm not adding any flips outs, tucks, belly bands, anything fancy like that.  The gussets (space between pages) are 1/8", so decorations should be kept flat-ish.  Using Stampin' Dimensionals will be fine, but not double layering.  Again, I wanted this to be a straight-forward learn how to make the book project.  My intent is to add pictures with minimal doo-dads later.

You will definitely have to watch the video for assembly of this book, but I am providing all of the measurements here.  I covered my spine and made all pages with Lemon Lime Twist cardstock.  Added some Berry Burst to the Front/Back/Spine, and used Bright & Beautiful Designer series papers throughout.

Base Covers and Spine (chipboard AND Adhesive Sheets):
  • (2) 5 1/2" x 5 1/2"
  • (1) 1" x 5 1/2"
CS to wrap cover:
  • (2) 7 1/2" x 8 1/2"
CS to cover INSIDE of spine:  3" x 5 1/4"

CS (pages to stack the deck) - score ALL of these on the long side at 5" from each end.
  • (1) 5" X 10 1/8"
  • (1) 5" X 10 3/8"
  • (1) 5" X 10 5/8"
DSP - to add to each page:
  • (12) 4 3/4" X 4 3/4"
CS or DSP to cover inside covers:
  • (2) 5 1/4" X 5 1/4"
DSP to make flat pocket on inside front cover:
  • (1) 2 1/4" x 5 1/4" - No scoring.  Glue down on 3 sides
CS to make gusseted pocket on inside back cover:
  • (1) 2 1/2" x 5 3/4" - Scored at 1/4" on (3) sides.
Covers/Spine decorative layers:
  • (2) CS:  5 1/4" x 5 1/4"
  • (2) DSP:  5" x 5"
  • (1) CS/Spine:  3/4" x 5 1/4"
  • (1) DSP/Spine:  1/2" x 5"
You'll also need 2 pieces of ribbon if you want to add ribbon closures like I did, and whatever you want to doll your cover up with.

I'll make a separate post later after I've added pictures and dolled up the cover.  Here it is for now - see my Denim Ribbon closures on the right side.

Open the cover to see my first page and flat pocket on the left.  Notice my notes - it took me (6) pieces of 8 1/2" x 11" Lemon Lime Twist , (1) piece of Berry Burst, and (14) pieces of 6" x 6" designer series paper to make this book.  As far as paper goes, that's not really a lot - and a good way to use up those papers!

Middle of the book that shows that 1/8" gusset between pages.

I made this picture really large, so you can see how the "deck" of pages stacks together, and then the whole thing is taped/glued to the inside spine.

Inside back cover pocket, trying to show how much roomier it is.  I've got a very bulky card tucked in there.

Last picture to show the mini book open and face-down.  You can see that I decorated both covers and the spine the same.

As soon as I have this mini book filled with pictures and decorated, I'll share that.  I REALLY hope you are feeling confident enough to try to make one of these little albums.  It's only paper, chipboard (or cereal box), and some glue/tape.  Give it a try!

Join me this Thursday - I finally have the chance to do some Christmas in July projects!  Yay!!!  I don't have a ton of new holiday stuff yet, but I have enough.
