Using Fabric in your Paper Crafting!

Happy Mother's Day Friends!  I hope you're all having a great day.

In last week's video demonstration, I showed you several different ways to use FABRIC in your paper crafts.  My projects were all cards, and one small tag - but you can apply these ideas to any paper crafting project.  Cards, scrapbook pages, ATCs, journals, mini albums, tags, pages to tuck into your journals....anything that you can make with paper, you can add some fabric to it!

The pink fabric is from a Stampin' Up pack of fabric from years ago.  The purple fabric is all from my mom's stash.  I don't know what she was planning to make with it, but she had a lot of purple (her favorite color) fabric.  I couldn't bear to just toss it, so I figured I'd find a use for it eventually.  Here we go...

Just a reminder that I am generally Live on-line every Thursday at 8:00pm ET.  I am streaming to BOTH YouTube and Facebook simultaneously.

If you are not able to catch me live, you can watch over on YouTube.  If the picture does not appear below, you can click HERE to get to it on YouTube.

NOTE:  I recommend using some sort of fusible interfacing.  Something lightweight.  Pellon is a good brand, but it doesn't have to be name brand.  I used some generic stuff that I got with my sewing machine, and it's perfect.  I used some fusible fleece on one piece, and that was really too thick for the thin metal dies.  You'll also need some glue specifically made for fabric.  I use FabriTac glue.  I think you could also use FabriFix, but it isn't as strong.

Fabric Idea #1:  This is the simplest and easiest way to add fabric to your projects.  Rip a strip off your fabric off, and use it like RIBBON.  I tied it around my layers here, then popped that whole bit up on the card front.  When I say rip it, I mean really rip it.  Make a small cut at the end of your fabric, then rip by hand.  It will rip in a straight line, and you'll have minimal strings hanging around.  It's a very rustic look, and I absolutely love it!  You can make your "ribbon" whatever width you want.

This card is pretty straight forward.  Layer the DSP to a piece of Melon Mambo.  Tie the fabric ribbon around.  Stamp and punch ladybug and greeting.  Finish up with some White Opaque gems (which I did not realize are retired.  Doh!)

Paper Measurements:
  • Melon Mambo:  5 1/2" x 8 1/2", scored and folded in half at 4 1/4"
  • Melon Mambo:  4" x 5 1/4"
  • Brights Designer Series paper (Melon Mambo):  3 7/8" x 5 1/8"
  • Basic White:  4" x 5 1/4", for inside of card
  • Basic White/Basic Black:  scraps to stamp/cut ladybug and label for greeting
I popped up the ladybug, but not the greeting.

Stamps:  Hello, Ladybug, Cheerful Daisies
Ink:  Melon Mambo, Tuxedo Black, Onyx (Versafine)
Paper:  Melon Mambo, Basic White, Basic Black, Brights DSP
Other:  Cheerful Daisies dies, Ladybug punch, White Opaque Gems, fabric

Fabric Idea #2:  Add a ruffle to your project!  You'll have to watch the video to see how I did this, but I laid down some Tear & Tape along the edge of the back of my embossed piece first.  Pleat and stick down the fabric to make the ruffle, then add some FabriTac glue over top of the edge to hold it all in place.  Use foam tape to attach that entire layer to the card front.

I embosssed that layer of Melon Mambo with one of the Basics embossing folders.  I thought the dots would tie in with the shapes on the fabric a little bit.

Paper measurements:
  • Melon Mambo:  5 1/2" x 8 1/2", scored and folded in half at 4 1/4"
  • Melon Mambo:  3 5/8" x 5 1/2", embossed with Basics #2 folder
  • Basic White:  4" x 5 1/4", for inside of card
  • Basic White/Melon Mambo:  scraps to die cut daisies and greeting label
Daisies are glued down flat.  I did add Clear wink of Stella to the Melon Mambo pieces.  Greeting is popped up.

Finish off with some Melon Mambo Opaque gems.

Stamps:  Cheerful Daisies bundle
Ink:  Melon Mambo
Paper:  Melon Mambo, Basic White
Other:  Basics embossing folders, Opaque Gems, Clear Wink of Stella, fabric

Fabric Idea #3:   Gluing fabric directly to your paper.  I did not have any fusible interfacing on the back of this piece, and I did not really care for the results.  On the positive side, the FabriTac glue does not bleed through the fabric or the paper.  Great!  On the negative side, when I laid down my fabric and tried to smooth things out...it made a few more wrinkles.  The fabric absorbs that glue, and then becomes really moveable.  I would prefer to have the interfacing on the back of it to stabilize things.

All I did for this was to glue on some dragonfly trinkets, and add a ribbon.  I didn't want to cover up that nice big dragonfly in the center, but I will probably go back and add a monogram or something when I'm ready to use it.

This is the back side - just Gorgeous Grape cut with the same Tailor Made Tag die.

Paper Measurements:
  • Gorgeous Grape:  2" x 4", cut with Tailor Made Tag die
Cut the fabric with the same die.

No stamping or anything on this...yet.

Fabric Idea #4:  Die cut a shape out of your fabric, to use as an accent on your project.  This is the piece that I used the fusible fleece on, and it was too thick for the thin metal dies.  If you have the older style steel-ruled dies, those will cut through fabric and fusible fleece like butter!

I glued down a Gorgeous Grape floral accent first, then glued the fabric flower down on top of that - using the FabriTac glue...kind of messy trying to get it on that small piece.  Next time, I might squirt out some glue on a non-stick mat and pick up the glue with a popsicle stick or tooth pick, to add to the back of the fabric.

Paper measurements:
  • Highland Heather:  5 1/2" x 8 1/2", scored and folded in half at 4 1/4"
  • Highland Heather:  4" x 5 1/4"
  • Basic White:  4" x 5 1/4", for inside of card
  • Gorgeous Grape:  scrap to die cut floral accent
  • Basic White:  scrap to die cut label for greeting
I added some White Baker's Twine tied in a bow, and popped the greeting up.  Finish with some Gorgeous Grape Opaque gems.

Stamps:  Cheerful Daisies
Ink:  Gorgeous Grape
Paper:  Highland Heather, Gorgeous Grape, Basic White
Other:  Bouquet of Love dies, Essentials Baker's Twine (white), Opaque gems, fabric

Fabric Idea #5:  Treat your fabric like designer series paper.  I used it for the entire background on this card, but you could certainly make smaller panels, and use different fabrics.  For this piece of fabric, I did iron on some lightweight fusible interfacing first.  I really recommend using the interfacing.  It makes the fabric sturdier, and easier to work with.

I wrapped it around a piece of Basic White cardstock, using FabriTac glue.  Then glue that to a layer of Melon Mambo.  I didn't want to cover up these butterflies, so I just made a small layered greeting, and glued that down flat with more FabriTac glue.

I hope this picture shows the wrapped edge.  Otherwise, I could have just cut it with my paper trimmer, and you'd see the Basic White cardstock edge.  Either way is perfectly fine.

Paper measurements:
  • Gorgeous Grape:  5 1/2" x 8 1/2", scored and folded in half at 4 1/4"
  • Melon Mambo:  4" x 5 1/4"
  • Basic White:  3 7/8" x 5 1/8", to wrap fabric around
  • Basic White:  4" x 5 1/4", for inside of card
  • Melon Mambo/Gorgeous Grape/Basic White:  scraps to punch and layer for greeting

Stamps:  Circle Sayings, Artistically Inked
Ink:  Gorgeous Grape, Melon Mambo
Paper:  Gorgeous Grape, Melon Mambo, Basic White
Other:  Decorative Circle punch, 2" and 1 3/4" circle punches, fabric

I hope this has given you some ideas for combining fabric and paper crafting.  I love being able to use my supplies in different ways!
