Salt Background Technique - fast and fun!

Hello Crafty Friends!

This week's Live video was focused on showing you how to use SALT to make some really cool backgrounds!  I'm using different kinds of paper, to show you how the results can vary.  I was also going to show two different types of salt, but it turns out I did not have Kosher salt in my pantry.  :(  I'm using Mediterranean Sea Salt - I like that the best for this technique.  Seems like the chunkier the salt, the better the results.

In the video, I show you the salt technique itself. I made several different backgrounds, and then had to let them sit overnight.  I had other salt pieces that I made ahead of time with the same colors.  I used some of those to make the cards.

Just a reminder that I am Live on-line every Thursday at 8:00pm ET.  I am streaming to BOTH YouTube and Facebook simultaneously.

If you are not able to catch me live, you can watch over on YouTube.  If the picture does not appear below, you can click HERE to get to it on YouTube.

Let me first show you some of the backgrounds that I ended up with, after everything dried overnight and I scraped the salt off of them.  I have mostly used these as background pieces, but you could certainly die cut things out of them, punch shapes, cut strips off...use them however you want!

Personally, I like the darker colors better. I think it shows the reaction with the salt better.

Let's start with the first card that I made.  The Salted piece of watercolor paper was made using Coastal Cabana and Crumb Cake inks.  I decided to stamp directly on to the water color paper.  I stuck with just those same two colors of ink as well.

Notice how the Crumb Cake looks pink-ish.  That's from the salt!  Every piece comes out differently.

Paper measurements:
  • Crumb Cake: 5 1/2" x 8 1/2", scored and folded in half at 4 1/4"
  • Crumb Cake:  4" x 5 1/4", embossed with Painted Textures folder
  • Basic White:  4" x 5 1/4" (for inside of card)
  • Salted Watercolor paper:  3 1/2" x 4 5/8"
Emboss the greeting on a bit of Coastal Cabana, cut with the Tasteful Labels dies.

I finished these off with a bunch of Iridescent Rhinestones.

Stamps:  Seas the Day
Ink:  Coastal Cabana, Crumb Cake, Versamark
Paper:  Crumb Cake, Coastal Cabana, Basic White, watercolor paper
Other:  Tasteful Labels dies, Painted Textures embossing folder, White embossing powder, Iridescent Rhinestones

Next up is an outer space card.  The colors for this Salt piece are Gorgeous Grape and Bermuda Bay.  I think they are PERFECT for space or underwater/mermaid scenes.  I did NOT stamp anything on the salted piece, but you certainly could.  I could have added some of the little stars and planets....oh well - next time!

Paper measurements:
  • Gorgeous Grape: 5 1/2" x 8 1/2", scored and folded in half at 4 1/4"
  • Basic Black:  4" x 5 1/4"
  • Basic White:  4" x 5 1/4" (one for inside of card)
  • Salted Shimmery White: 3 13/16" x 5 1/16"
  • Shimmery White:  scraps to stamp and cut out astronauts and rocket ship
  • Gorgeous Grape:  scrap to stamp/layer greeting
I didn't have Gorgeous Grape Stampin' Blends to color in the girl's outfit, so I used either Blackberry Bliss or Highland Heather.  Both kids got crazy color hair - pink and orange!

Finish this off with a LOT of Iridescent rhinestones, and Clear Wink of Stella all over the rocket ship and their space outfits.

Stamps:  Stellar Birthday
Ink: Midnight (Catherine Pooler)
Paper:  Gorgeous Grape, Basic Black, Basic White, Shimmery White
Other:  Stampin' Blends (various colors), Double Oval punch, Clear Wink of Stella marker, Iridescent Rhinestones

For the third card, I decided to add some die-cuts and just stamp the greeting.  The salted watercolor paper background is the island sunset.  I used Melon Mambo, Pumpkin Pie, and Daffodil Delight to make this sunset.  I think next time, I will try it with Real Red instead of the Mambo.  Don't get me wrong - I love the pink!  But I might like it with Red too!

Notice the splotches in the Melon Mambo area?  That's from the salt.  Again, EVERY piece you make with this salted background technique will turn out beautiful and different!

Paper measurements:
  • Melon Mambo: 5 1/2" x 8 1/2", scored and folded in half at 4 1/4"
  • Basic Black:  4" x 5 1/4"
  • Basic White:  4" x 5 1/4" (one for inside of card)
  • Salted Watercolor: 3 7/8" x 5 1/8"
  • Basic Black:  about 1/4 sheet (4 1/4" x 5 1/2") should be enough to die cut the palm trees, grass, and greeting.

Emboss white on black cardstock for the greeting.

Finish this off with a LOT of Iridescent rhinestones.

Stamps:  Paradise Palms bundle
Ink: Versamark
Paper:  Melon Mambo, Pumpkin Pie, Basic Black, Basic White, Watercolor paper
Other:  Double Oval punch, White embossing powder, Iridescent Rhinestones

WOW!  I really love how all of the salted pieces turned out.  I may die-cut some things out of a few pieces, but I will likely put the rest in my background bin.  I have a basket full of different background pieces, just waiting to be used on a project.

Reminder that my March Online Class will air this coming Monday and Tuesday - March 14th and 15th.  This month, I'm making cards using the Waves of the Ocean papers, and you'll get a pack of the Rhinestone Waves Basic Jewels with your class kit!  More details on Monday...so check back!
