A Beautiful Day - White Wash technique

I've seen this technique around for a while, but I always thought it was too involved.  It's NOT!  White Washing is very easy.  I did a google search, and found a few different videos.  The basic steps are all the same:

  • Heat emboss your image.  All of the samples I found used white embossing powder, on a neutral/crumb cake card.

  •  Squeeze out a drop or two of Whisper White Craft reinker onto a block or mat.  Add a few drops of water from your Aqua Painter, and paint the white all over your image.
  • Let that dry.  The heavier you paint the white wash on, the longer it will take to dry.
  • Add color on top of the white wash with a marker.  Spread/blend it around with your Aqua Painter.  This will re-wet the craft ink, and the color and white ink will move a lot.  That's okay.  Clean the white ink off the tip of your marker.
  • Let your card dry.

After it's dried completely, you can go back in and add more color and blend it around.  Be careful though - you are not using watercolor paper, and this basic/neutral card stock can only stand so much water before it starts to fail.  Play around with this to find the sweet spot.

For my butterfly card, I used the Pretty in Pink marker.  It's light already, but when mixed with the white wash, it gets even lighter.  I like it, but you could go darker if you wanted.

For the flower card, I used Pink Passion and Wild Wasabi markers.  I chose Pink Passion because it was so much darker than the Pretty in Pink, and I wanted to see the differences.

I also went back a second time with the Pink Passion marker, and tried to add dimension.  I am NOT GOOD with the coloring and shadowing!!!  This is one of those cards that looks better from afar.  :)  I'm okay with that.  I know that my coloring skill set is sub-par.

Overall, I still like how these cards turned out, and since this technique is way easier than I thought...I can see myself doing more of this.  The hardest part for me is finding the open images that are color-ins.  Since I'm not great at coloring, I tend to not buy a lot of those kinds of stamps.  Doh!

I hope you learned a little something, and have something new to try out!
