Faux Tarnished Foil Technique - WOW!

Welcome back Crafty friends!  This week I was playing with the Faux Tarnished Foil Technique.  It's called "Faux" because I'm using Foil papers...not real tin foil.  You can wrap tin foil around a piece of cardstock (any color, because it's hidden), and do the same technique.

Most of the times, I'll see this technique done with Silver foil paper.  I wanted to spice things up a bit, so I used (3) different colors of Foil papers for my bases.  They're all gorgeous, but I think I am partial to the Copper.

Just a reminder that I go Live on my Facebook Page every Thursday at 8:00pm ET.

If you were not able to catch me live, you can still watch it on YouTube!  If the picture does not appear below, you can click HERE to get to it on YouTube.

The basic steps for the Faux Tarnished Foil Technique are:
  • Swipe Black Staz-On ink across your piece of foil randomly - just dirty it up a little bit.
  • Emboss your foil paper with your favorite embossing folder
  • Add different shades of metallic embossing powder to your piece.  I used Tombow Glue and a sponge on some, and Versamark ink on some.
  • Go back and rub the Black Staz-On ink across some of the raised up embossed bits to make them stand out.
  • Mount and finish your card.
Let's start with the Brick & Mortar embossing folder card!  I used Silver Foil as the base here, and added Gold and Copper embossing powders.  I kept the rest of the card pretty simple - added the leaves die cut, and the greeting.

Paper measurements FOR ALL (3) cards:
  • Basic Black: 5 1/2" x 8 1/2", scored in half at 4 1/4".
  • Basic Black: 3 15/16" x 5 3/16"
  • Foil papers (Silver, Gold, Copper): 3 3/4" x 5"
  • Basic Black:  whatever is needed to die cut all of the pieces and greeting strips.

I didn't add any extra doo-dads to any of the cards either.  I may go back and add some..but for now, I thought the Faux Tarnished Foil backgrounds really stand out nicely on their own.

Stamps: Artistic Expressions
Ink: Versamark
Paper:  Basic Black, Silver Foil
Other:  Brick & Mortar embossing folder, Artistic dies, Metallic embossing powders

Next, I embossed Gold foil with the Parisian Flourish folder.  That REALLy looks nice!  Add some flower die cuts, and a gold-embossed greeting.

You may have figured out by now that I embossed the greeting with the same color as the base piece.  So I used GOLD on this card...silver on the Brick & Mortar card.

Stamps: Shaded Summer
Ink: Versamark
Paper:  Basic Black, Gold Foil
Other:  Parisian Flourish embossing folder, Meadow dies, Metallic embossing powders

Last up is the Copper Foil card with the Painted Textures folder.  If I HAVE to pick a favorite, this is it.  I love the rich color of the Copper foil.  Adding the Staz-On at the end really makes those "paint" layers pop.

I had this great idea to add some embossing to just the tips of some of these leaf die cuts...it doesn't show up that well against the background, but I will definitely give some more leaves this treatment and add to a less-busy card.  Maybe just a solid black card, so they really shine!

Close-up so you can see what I mean -

Stamps: Artistically Inked
Ink: Versamark
Paper:  Basic Black, Copper Foil
Other:  Painted Texture embossing folder, Intricate Leaves dies, Metallic embossing powders

I hope you are inspired to go through your embossing folders and give this a try!  I love it, and I am really happy that I tried it with the different colors of foil papers.

Thanks for visiting, and Happy stamping!
